  Newspapers have an enormous influence on people's ideas and opinions. Why is this the case? Do you think it is a positive or negative trend?

  In this age of high technology and the Internet, newspapers still exert a powerful influence in societal thinking, for many who are not digitally connected. Generally speaking, their role is beneficial, however biased reporting is often not and may sway reader’s thoughts. There are several reasons for this and this essay will look at just two key points whether this is constructive and why. (64 words)

  The media in most countries provide useful information to their readers, such as political news, weather forecasts, sports and entertainment as well as investment advice. This information if unbiased, is helpful for general, as well as specific knowledge and planning. However, when the information becomes slanted and blatant propaganda, significant harm can result. The population, to some extent may become brainwashed with erroneous information. Sadly, this can cause harm and divisions, leading to civil unrest. (75 words)

  There are always large sections of the population, in any country that are ‘sheep’. These people may not have an opinion one way or the other, and perhaps don’t have the intellect to fully research as well as analyze the presented information. What’s more, they are often willing to be led by some charismatic person or group, offering simplistic solutions to complex situations. Hence, the power of the media to influence peoples opinion and understanding who really have little to no understanding. Consequently, in this fractured world, it’s a damaging development. (91 words)

  So, to conclude newspaper companies have a moral responsibility to always report balanced, factual information that maintains not only civility and harmony but also the status quo. As the saying goes, the pen is mightier than the sword. In my opinion, editors need to contemplate that, and its impact before the publication of material to the masses. (57 words)
