　　Thousands of stories of human beings have narrated how orators, ranging from Winston Churchill to Abraham Lincoln, have impressed deeply their listeners and followers through their touching speeches; those stories also imply that those spoken materials like “I have a dream” are profoundly changing our attitudes towards our surroundings and societies. It seems that spoken communications sometimes do have a deep influence, but they can never be thought more powerful than the written ones—it depends on different understandings of “powerful”.

　　When people certainly are better moved through communicating verbally, and are extremely hard to resonate that much when they read letters or other written materials, they may find that speaking can kindle more interests and emotions than writing. That is mainly because when holding an instant, face to face communication, one is informed with understandable and fluent verbal elements; there they are impressed by the moment during which the meanings and utterance are delivered directly and straightforward, and therefore become persuasive and vividly. What is more noticeable is that the interconnectedness is manifest when people speak out to each other, and mutual agreement is made easily. But if those communicating parts are presented on paper, with printed letters of fonts like Roman or Gothic, or even if are written with cursive handwriting, they are seemingly less than persuasive and touching: the words are always plain and more complicated, and that precludes people from immediately feeling the empathy with their communicators. That explains why most consider the writing communication are less powerful than talks and speeches.

Before assessing whether languages that are expressed orally is with more power than composed in chunks or discourses, one must first define what kind of feeling brought about is so-called “powerful”. However effective the spoken languages are, they still lack the ability of interpreting things profoundly and multi-dimensionally, because expressions are figured out instantly to ensure the fluency during the communication process, and straight enough to guarantee the mutual understanding. Whilst with organized, meticulous word usage and deliberate rhetoric, writing communication forms overwhelm speeches in terms of the linguistic depth, and is relatively more long-lasting. From that perspective, writings are inevitably more “powerful” than speaking.

　　In conclusion, I would much agree that speaking communication is not always more influencing and impressing than writing ones, because I too share the gift of foresight of seeing the potential in writing that and make a more profound impact under some particular circumstances.
