　　The question of life in metropolises has divided the general public for decades. Before scrutinizing the pros and cons of big city life, I would like to point out that the terms ‘difficult’ and ‘easy’ are subjective terms that differ with individuals. Both views can be justified, depending on one’s definition of life.

　　From the ‘easy’ perspective, the amenities of well-developed cities have some outstanding benefits. Public transport, water and electrical supply systems and communication infrastructures are particularly appreciated by those who rely greatly on these services for their daily business. Also, metropolitan cities, with their numerous department stores, restaurants and cultural destinations are greatly appreciated because residents have many leisure time choices. Good business opportunities allow citizens to participate in these activities.

　　On the other hand, and from the ‘difficult’ perspective, many people from less well-off families, must deal with the high stress of residing in large urban areas. The convenient and colorful metropolitan lifestyle of those of more affluent social status does not translate to the working poor living in poverty. Their daily concern is the financial burden of accessing food, rental and medical service, not to mention many unemployed who cannot afford even their basic needs. Adding to the economic concern, is the emotional pressure of toiling long hours with no leisure relief – Long-term exposure to such conditions inevitably exacerbates mental health problem such as anxiety or depression.

　　In examining both sides of this statement, it is my opinion that life in large urban centers could be deemed both ‘difficult’ or ‘easy’ depending on the discrete social needs of individuals.
