　　I want to talk about an important lake in my country, the Lake Tai which is a very large lake located on the Yangtze Delta near Shanghai, in fact it is the third-largest freshwater lake in China. I used to visit it many years ago with my family. At that time, the scenery around the lake was captivating, many tourists referred to the river as a worthwhile visit.

　　However, in recent times, it has been plagued by pollution due to the rapid growth of surrounding regions. It is reported that there are thousands of factories on its shores, which possibly all discharge industrial waste into its waters. So the lake has long been polluted by raw sewage, fertilizers, and chemicals, as well as being a popular dumping ground for domestic and industrial waste.

　　These pollutants reduce the quality of the water, which is relied on by millions of people living on the shores of the lake in many aspects. First, the pathogens present in sewage water are responsible for spreading different kinds diseases, which pose a great risk to human health. In addition, toxins released in rivers through sewage water are consumed by fish and other aquatic organisms. Finally, the water becomes unsuitable for drinking and irrigation. Use of such kind of water for agricultural purpose leads to salinization of soil, which in turn causes soil erosion.

　　Despite the governments has taken great efforts to reduce the pollution levels, the problem doesn’t seem to be improving.
