　　一次差点搞砸的经历

　　I’d like to talk about the time when I did a group project for my English Literature course in my second year in university. At that time, our professor wanted the class to do a presentation on an English writer in groups of 4 or 5 members. We could decide which writer we wanted to focus on. The result of this presentation would be part of the end-of-term exam result, so it was really important to choose an appropriate topic and do it well.

　　All the other groups chose celebrated writers in the English literary history, such as Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. However, our group decided to do something different. We agreed we didn’t want to talk about a historical figure but a contemporary writer instead. Because it would be different from what others were doing and we would stand out. And after some discussion, we decided on Ian McEwan. It was a risky choice, because we’d heard rumors that the professor didn’t like contemporary writers. However, we stuck to our plan.

　　On the day of the presentation, we were all really nervous and worried that the rumors were actually true and we would fail because of our reckless decision. But as it turned out, our worries were absolutely unnecessary. The professor really liked our work and praised us for the detailed research we’d done. He said that our topic was refreshing. And our group got the best result.

　　I was exhilarated and very proud of myself. I guess sometimes it’s worth it to take a risk. If you’re always afraid of failure and play it safe all the time, you’re not likely to achieve something great.
