The conversation I'd like to share with you occurred two weeks ago. I made an appointment and ate dinner with Dean, one of my good friends and we enjoyed some quality time. As he had stayed in Australia for about 3 years, the talk after eating covered a lot about his foreign life of course. And then, we came back to reality and the topic was shifted to marriage.

Dean asked me how I liked my marital life and I said I was happy with it. He commented that I was lucky, because many people tend to feel bored with their partners 3 or 4 years after getting married. I said I agreed and was all ears to his solution, then he threw this personal point to me. In his opinion, marriage should evolve into something like a renewable contract and the couple should be given the freedom whether to stay in or jump out of it every 3 years. "Just a good way to kill 3 year itch", he said.

To be frank, I was like OH MY GOD at that time and didn't know what to respond. I'd never heard of nor thought about contract marriage before. It was counter-intuitive, but wait… it was also kind of exciting, radical and even considerate maybe? To some extent, I felt Dean's theory presented a new angle to approach relationship issues: If you are not happy together, the marriage should be open to a closure. It's about human rights, isn't it? I told Dean that I believed many people suffered tossing and turning in a bad marriage in their life, and if one day his tip was taken as a law, those guys would appreciate his great help.
