I used to work in New York City for years. Many people might think there is no other place with an energy that can compete with NYC – anything you want to do in an international city, you can do more here. There are endless bars and restaurants for those enjoy social life and happy hours; it is the home of Broadway musicals and tons of award-winning comedy shows. You will be able to meet people from all over the world trying to make a living here. It is just like what Alicia Key sings – “concrete jungle where dreams are made of”.

However, if you work in a high-stress job, this whole world of glamourous life becomes nothing but a fairy tale to you. Part of my job involved making weekly financial forecast for senior management and the Federal Reserve Bank. Long hours are definitely guaranteed; you also needed to get ready for calls to put out some fires! After a 12-ish hour work day, do you still want to visit a new drink venue to meet your friends? Or go to the opening of a new gallery?

The answer became extremely straight forward – I just wanted to go back to my bedroom to relax! My room was far away from being fancy. It was part of a 3 bed-room apartment and facing one of the main avenues. I could clearly hear trucks hauling by sometimes. On the bright side, it had 3 windows so there were lots of sun lights during the day. Most importantly, that was my personal space where I could cut myself out from the outside world. There was no “time zones” in my room, I could communicate with friends from Asia to Europe to North America simultaneously. I could watch thriller movies deep into the nights without worrying if I needed to hand in any reports. Your place, your rules. When talking about relaxation, there was no other place I would rather be.
