I believe changing one’s mind is really hard for a lot of people: most of us have a strong drive to hold on to pre-existing beliefs, and the rest may be afraid of the paths they have never considered before. Changing your mind doesn’t necessarily lead you to a more supreme answer in life, but I think it is still much better than staying stagnant and stubborn. Though I don’t do it often, I have changed my opinions about people, subjects and places.

I always believe my home city is the best place to live: it’s clean and warm, and has a vibrant economy and superb transportation system. More importantly, the pace of life is slower than a lot of mega cities in the country. Most of my friends who grew up here ended up working here after graduation. People are so used to the quality of life here with less stress from work that they rarely move out. I shared the same opinion – the idea of working in a different city that I have never lived in seems unreasonable to me. Last year, one of my friends moved to another city for work; another one who had already worked in another city moved to a third city to start a new life. People were busy making changes and experiencing different life and work opportunities other places had to offer. It made me wonder whether I should try to see if I would enjoy a busier place. Last year, I was offered to work in one of the most fast-paced places in the country. I had tossed and turned at night thinking if I should step outside of my comfort zone and try a different life at a different place. I decided to take a leap of faith and packed my stuffs and took up the offer.

As it turned out, I needed to work my butt off every single day in the new city. But it was worthwhile – I had my dream job where I was extremely passionate about my work and it allowed me not only to use my greatest skillsets but also enhanced what I wanted to improve for years. The city was next to the ocean and people often relaxed on the coast with a great view after a busy work day. I was glad that I made the change and kept on enriching my work and life experiences. I now believe staying in one’s own home city may not be the best option, and one will never know what is better for him/her unless having tried the change.
