　　Speaking of a volunteering experience, I’d like to talk about the time I spent with Judie, a child with leukemia. Last year, I joined the “Sunshine Program”, which was started in our university with an aim to cheer up the children diagnosed with leukemia. There were 5 volunteers in total. We gathered at the school gate and took the bus to the hospital together, On my way there, I was quite nervous, because even though I had heard about the dreadful disease, I had never “met” it in person. When we got to the hospital, we were asked to wear masks and then introduced to the ward for leukemia patients.

　　There were 6 beds in the ward and that was where we met Judie. He was a little shy to see us at first, but soon was attracted to the toys we brought for him and became quite talkative. When we were playing with Judie, his mother was sitting next to us, smiling. She later told us that Judie was 5 years old and was diagnosed last month. He didn’t know what was wrong and was quite happy that he didn’t need to go to school for a long time. We spent 40 minutes there that day, and I’d say that this visit somehow changed the way I think and live. It’s quite easy for people to feel how vulnerable life is when confronting dreadful diseases, and it hurts to think that Judie did nothing wrong but just wasn’t lucky.

　　I think of Judie from time to time, wondering how he is doing right now. I hope he is happy wherever he is, and I also hope that people can be truly grateful for being healthy
