I would like to talk about someone who I am not only interested in, but also really wish to meet in person. She was an English novelist who lived from the 18th century to the 19thcentury, and is world famous for her 6 major novels, which are about middle-class life in England during her time. You may already be very familiar with some of her works, such as Emma, Persuasions, Pride & Prejudice, and Sense & Sensibility. Almost all of her major novels have been adapted for the big and small screens, and some of them are even adapted several times, both in the UK and US. People usually say Jane Austen adaptations never go out of style - they always include some candlelit ballroom, elegant dances, sumptuous parties, lavish costumes, beautiful country walks and family dinners. And of course, some lovely proposals as well.

I first came to know Jane when I watched Keira Knightley’s Pride and Prejudice in 2005. It was a romantic drama film about 5 sisters from an England family of landed gentry. They dealt with issues of marriage, morality and misunderstandings. The 2 main characters overcame their own weakness, - pride and prejudice , of course - and then united and lived happily ever after. I might have oversimplified the story here and made it sound like a fairytale, but Austen’s works are actually tremendously realistic. She was always praised for her biting irony and clear insights on what really matters in life.

Jane was from a lower-middle class family in the countryside, similar to a lot of female characters in her works, and she began writing at the age of 14. She lived a modest life and her novels were not famous during her lifetime. I am interested in her because of what she taught me through her characters - things like how to choose friends, how to learn from mistakes, and what really matters in life. After reading tons of her works and reviews of her works, I think her thoughts and understanding of people’s emotions, choices and feelings are timeless. I can still use what she taught me from her books in today’s life.
