　　When I was a kid, I never played many video games. My parents thought, given my weak self-discipline at the time, it would be hard for me to not get sucked into a game and stay productive. If a game involves a complicated story like those in RPGs (role-playing games), I may become too interested in chasing the plot to keep up on studying, exercising, or even hanging out with friends or family members. But when every young person around you had their favorite game, it was hard to avoid conversations about games.

　　I was recommended to play Angry Birds in 2009, because I could see them literally in everyone’s hand – people played this game on their phone when standing in a line to get their morning coffee, when waiting to get on a bus, or whenever they didn’t have anything more important to do! The main characters of the game involve a stylized wingless bird and a bunch of hungry green pigs. Player use a slingshot to launch the birds at pigs stationed in or around various structures, with the goal of destroying all the pigs because they have stolen the birds’ eggs. The tactic is very simple: since the player can only use a slingshot, they can either launch a limited set of birds to strike the enemy pigs directly, or, damage their surrounding structures, causing the blocks to collapse and squash the pigs.

　　This sounds like a truly dumb game and I only play it when I needed to kill time and felt anxious about doing nothing. But why was such seemly simple game so massively compelling? Don’t people like truly engaging, carefully planned, scripted games more? I think like many people, I like this simple game because it only requires relatively brief period of experience with the software, so I won’t spend a lot of time in it and make my daily life unproductive. In addition, it is a simple yet psychologically engaging game: as the complexity level increases, players need to work on their crafts on launching the slingshot, at the right angles and with less respond time in order to kill more pigs with fewer shots. Once you start the game, it is hard to put it down.
