Durian is known as the king of fruits throughout its native Southeast Asia. I have never eaten it before but have long heard of its distinctly funky smell. There is no getting around it – I heard the order is so powerful that the fruit is not for everyone. I also know people have two extreme feelings towards Durian – either love it or absolutely hate it. Fruit geeks with an adventurous spirit and an open mind generally fall in love with durian and its funkiness.

Though never having the chance to taste a real durian, I have had durian flavored pizza, cake and ice cream, as well as spring rolls with durian source in some Vietnamese restaurants. To my surprise, I found durian source buttery, creamy, sweet and savory, which adds a lot of flavor to appetizers and disserts. But I heard eating raw durian isn’t the same as eating durian flavored snacks, and the smell can be repulsive. On the other hand, it offers rich potassium, iron, dietary fiber, vitamin C and vitamin B complex. Durian is a naturally enhanced fruit that is fortified with all the excellent nutrients needed by our bodies to support our immune system, enhance red blood cells generation and improve our muscle strength. Out of curiosity, I went to a supermarket last week to buy some raw durian and gave it a try. The fruit had a scary-looking thorny husk, and the staff sliced it open with a sharp knife, took out the fresh and the seeds and wrapped them into separate paper for me. I stored the flesh in my fridge and opened it the next day. Due to staying in the fridge overnight, most of the fruit’s odor was gone. Compared to the flesh, the seeds were huge and not even edible. The flesh had a thick, creamy texture and a sweet-savory taste that made it similar to eating a rich disserts. It is certainly different than most fruits which are generally full of juice and have a sour taste. Eating raw durian is more like eating an avocado in my opinion - the flesh is thicker, dryer and heavier, but it’s still pretty pleasant to swallow.
