　　1.Are films a waste of money?

　　Well, for movie viewers, it can be a waste of money if they find the movie boring. Particularly, when the plots and effects are not as attracitve as they imagined, they would definitely consider the movie as time-wasting and money-consuming. In contrast, if the film is intriguing and inspiring, the audience will find it worthwhile and might even want to watch it again. Similarly, for movie producers, a blockbuster that gains great popularity will be a money spinner, on the other hand, an unsuccessful movie means a failure for those investors.

　　2.Are movie stars important to a movie?

　　Yes, I believe so. Stars have been playing an important role in the success of movies in recent decades. Because of their great popularity among the public, these famous idols can help increase ticket sales by attracting lots of viewers. Usually, an A-lister cast is more likely to become box office smashes than other movies that are shown at the same time. Having said that, I suppose that famous actors might become less important in the future as a result of the wide use of digital technologies in the movie industry. For example, the fantastic characters created by CGI (computer-generated imagery) are also welcomed by the viewers of blockbusters like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Alita: Battle Angel’. So, it is possible that human actors and actresses will not be as important as they are now.

　　3.Are foreign movies popular in China?

　　Yes, foreign movies have been popular in China in recent decades. In the 1980s, Japanese movies were very poplular in China, including thrillers, romances and period dramas. If you talk with Chinese people who are in their 50s or 60s, you are likely to find that they could still sing the theme songs of those movies. In recent years, science fiction movies and cartoon movies have become the favorites of Chinese viewers. There are millions of fans who are so addicted to the Marvel Cinematic Universes that once a new episode is on, they will flood into cinemas to enjoy it. Meanwhile, both children and adults are crazy about movies produced by Walt Disney and Dreamworks, such as CoCo, Soul, The Croods, and Zootopia. I think these productions are popular because of their creative plots and amazing special effects.

　　4.Is it important that a country has its own movies?

　　Certainly. I agree that it is important for every country to produce its own movies. The main reason is that movies are not only entertatining, they are also channels through which a nation can impart and promote their culture. If the younger generation in a country grew up with foreign movies full of elements from other cultures, they would find it difficult to connect with history, traditions and customs in their own country. This trend is harmful to a nation’s development. In addition,  producing domestic movies will lead to an increase in employment in the movie industry, income from movie sales and perhaps evern a rise in tourist numbers, contributing to a country’s econmoic growth.
