　　I can’t really say what types of markets there are in China because I haven’t been there, but I’ve got friends who’ve been and by all accounts the food markets aregreat. There’s cheap,delicious, home-made food which features very distinct flavours to the food we have here in NZ.

　　2、Do you think markets will disappear in the future?

　　I hope not, but if COVID sticks around it’s possible they’ll start to disappear. That sort of large gathering is a pretty good way to spread a virus, so it just won’t be viable to allow them to continue. I’m hoping we can stamp out COVID so that, among all the other things, the markets can flourish.

　　3、Have people’s shopping habits changed in recent years?

　　Shopping habits have undergone huge changes. More people shop online nowadays, because it’s cheap, easy, and relieves some stress at the end of the working day. You can even buy groceries online – when I was living in England 10 years ago Ocado was just becoming big, which delivers groceries right to your doorstep. This hasn’t really caught on in NZ, but who knows what might happen going forward.

　　4、What are the differences between shopping in the street markets and big shopping malls？

　　Street markets seem less corporate and more communityoriented than shopping malls. The problem with shopping malls is that rent for stores is expensive, so only the big brands can set up shops in them. Meanwhile, street markets cost you very little to set up a stall, so tiny, family-owned businesses can make a name for themselves and earn a living.
